America’s Turn

Masculinity is very stereotypical when it comes to guys. Guys are supposed to be big, buff and fearless but there are many different types of guys out there who don’t fall into that category. In the past there have been significant figures who represent their generation. The turn we are taking now in America is best represented by Josh Hutcherson from the film “The Hunger Games.” In this amazing film there is a boy and a girl who are from the same district which is just like from the same city. They are chosen for the Hunger Games which is a battle between 24 people and they fight to the death until there is only one remaining. Peeta creates a strong bond with Katniss during this process and falls in love with her. He shows that he is strong but also masculine which is an example of the guys in our society today. Mckay says in his article “The Generations of Men: How the Cycles of History Shape Your Values, Your Idea of Manhood, and Your Future” that “The changing of the turnings always catches people by surprise, as people ever suppose that life will keep going on just like it is now.” In the Hunger Games Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) who decides that these Hunger Games have been going on for too long and that he needs to make a change or else life for others will keep going on like this. In this turn that America is making Josh Hutcherson is the person that best represents this because he was not afraid of change and he was a very masculine character and took risk. Being aggressive and tough are qualities that men are supposed to obtain as they grow up. Mckay defines millennials in his article by saying “Millennials are also confident and ambitious goal-setters, and remain optimistic despite the downbeat economy; although they’ve been hit hard by the downturn.” Josh Hutcherson lived in a dead beat district that was economically challenged but he never let that get him down. When he was chosen again for the next Hunger Games he decided that he was going to do something about it. That is why I believe Josh Hutcherson belongs where the question mark is. He represents America’s turn.

  1. This blog was quite interesting. Especially because I have never read the book. I like how you thoroughly explained exactly what the character did. The explanation helped someone like me who haven’t read the book a better way to understand what was happening.

First off I will say that I am team Peeta, but I never looked at Peeta this way. Maybe its because the book focuses more on Katniss, but this is definitely a interesting view. However, the way you described Peeta I would have described Katniss especially given their backgrounds. Peeta had more of a sheltered upbringing whereas Katniss had to step up and be the strong one for her family after her father died.
